If I click new point, how do I get my settings to let me select another point to copy the elevation or description from rather than typing it in manually. When I try typing in a command such as "point" it tells me I need a numeric value or option keyword. Is there a way to set it up so I can select a point to inherit the elevation and or the description from?

One way....and I don't know if it is the only way is opening Point Settings Dialogue Box under the Points Menu. You have options there to enter Defaults for Elevation and/or Descriptions. You might need to play with the Radio Buttons to get your desired result>
