WORKSPACE/CUI Management. Help.

In AutoCAD 2006:

In the Customize User Interface (CUI) dialog box,

I created a new workspace, named "SARAH", and customized the menus. So that all Vanilla CAD, LDD, Civil and Survey menus are displayed across the top - eliminating the need to switch back and forth by having to load cad.cui, or land.cui, or survey.cui every 15 minutes.

It appeared to be successful.

Until I hit Apply and OK. And return to CAD.

ALL MY MENUS HAVE DISAPPEARED. When I toggle between workspaces (using the current workspace toolbar) "SARAH" and "SURVEY" or whatever, NO MENUS LOAD.

The work-around is to close AutoCAD and re-open it, where upon random toolbars and menus are displayed, in no particular order. It's fine enough to get work done, except I want to LABEL --> EDIT SETTING/STYLES --> and label up some points w/ no.'s and descriptions for a quick field file. My LABEL MENU IS PERMANENTLY MISSING.

I'm going to kill this machine. Please help!!

Are your workspace settings set to SAVE the workspace? Keep in mind that
you can only have 24 menus displayed at a time.

One minor thing that I will add. You can have more than 24 menus displayed,
they just will not appear the next time you start LDD. You can add a couple
of items to you an opening lisp file that will do it, however.

Do you happen to have "automatically save changes to workspace" turned on?
If so, then you can't edit workspaces in the CUI editor. It's not logical
nor is it documented but that's how it works. More info can be found here:

Yes I have "automatically save changes to workspace" toggled on. I will try untoggling this function, and editing my space.

Other stuff since last post:

continuing to get two error messages: 1) the customization group you are attempting to load already exists, blah blah cannot load same name, etc, go to transfer tab
and 2) unable to locate land.cui, it's been moved, deleted or renamed <<-- none of the above. It exists in the proper directory and if I hit OK, I can select it, making it current, while in customize interface dialog box.

Thanks for your replies. I continue to be unsuccesful managing workspaces. Although I do now understand that I am not to make or edit a .cui file, just workspaces w/in .cui files. And what's w/ partial .cui files???

Can they make this anymore confusing, difficult or retarded?

Ralph,

I have untoggled that function: "save automatically" in the workspace settings dialog box. I continue to get the error message as displayed below.

Thanks you guys for your assistance. I'm stuck in the arctic right now so easy access to an employee at surveyors exchange (Alaska's distributor of Autodesk products) is not an option. I sent a hyperlink to our IT guy in town (Anchorage) to link to this discussion group, as he is trying to work out this problem as well.

with all those errors, you may want to try this. its been around for some time, however R.K. Mcswains explaination is exemplenary.

You've clearly encountered some issues that nobody else around here has ever
seen. With CUIs, that's easy to do. I'm truly at a loss. It might not be
a bad idea to start with the out of the box CUI files again. To do so,
first copy C:\Documents and Settings\yourloginname\Application
Data\Autodesk\AutoCAD Civil 3D Land Desktop Companion
2008\R17.1\enu\Support\*.CUI to a temporary location.

Then copy C:\Program Files\AutoCAD Civil 3D Land Desktop Companion
2008\UserDataCache\Support\*.CUI to the following location: C:\Documents
and Settings\yourloginname\Application Data\Autodesk\AutoCAD Civil 3D Land
Desktop Companion 2008\R17.1\enu\Support

Then, delete *.mnr from the same directory.

Finally, verify that the proper customization file is loaded by going to
CONFIG / FILES / CUSTOMIZATION FILES / MAIN CUSTOMIZATION FILE

Once you've done all this, try to create a new workspace again and report
back to the group with the results.

If that doesn't work, then it might be time to try a repair install (and I
_hate_ when novice users suggest repair installs, filesystem
defragmentation, and upgrading video drivers around these newsgroups).

Our IT guy in town suggested something similar --> see below --> I followed his directions and my error messages are gone. Setting cad.cui as my "main" cui and created a new workspace "sarah" -- so far so good.

One thing is that when I make changes to my new workspace, I'm "saving" (by setting it current while it is current) my profile (also "sarah") and then exporting it to C:\Program Files\Autodesk 2006\sarah.arg Exit/Re-open LDD, good to go. EXCEPT when I then select my workspace "sarah" from the workspace toolbar: menus/toolbars I want exist on screen, but all over the screen (not docked or located where I saved them last). So I then tried re-setting my profile to current, same thing. Menus/toolbars exist on screen but not docked or set where I want them.

There seems to be some kind of problem w/ communication between my workspace "sarah" and my profile "sarah". What is the relationship between workspaces and profiles??

Sarah,

That is the toggle that I was talking to you about on the phone.

You may need to copy the land.cui from the base folder that may be something like “C:\Program Files\ Autodesk Land Desktop 2006\UserDataCache\Support”

to a new folder you create on the c:\ drive (something like c:\LDD-Sarah) then go into the Options dialog and Files Tab and change the location of the cui in “YOUR” profile to the

new folder you created with a copy of the land.cui file. DO NOT copy the land.cui file from the other users!! Make sure it is from the program file path like I listed above.

Make sure you save the profile and export the profile out to C:\Program Files\ Autodesk Land Desktop 2006. Then verify that on the icon that you are using, the target reads something like "C:\Program Files\ Autodesk Land Desktop 2006\acad.exe" /p "C:\Program Files\ Autodesk Land Desktop 2006\your-profile.arg" /nologo /w make sure there is the .arg at the end of the profile and that there is a spaces between the last “ and the /nologo and /w.

Then restart LDD and making sure the toggle is set correctly, start from scratch and create a workspace. Do not name it the same as the one you created before.
