Same project names killswitch?

hello! we have recently upgraded to LDD3 and would like to have the projects
folder name to be "LDD", which is stored under our project #.... this
becomes a problem, because when we want to access one of these projects, it
asks which one to use, but they are in different directories! i would write
more, but my question is, is there a setting to overlook same project names
that are sotred in different folders?? or maybe a default setting of some
sort? thanks....

Hi Steven,

You can do anything you like with respect to the folders where you store
your data. However, life is much easier if you use the way the software is
designed. For me the thought of naming every project LDD is horrific. The
opportunities it provide for user confusion almost guarantee you will get
messed up project data at some time.

At the absolute minimum you will lose one level of project indexing and
hence take longer to find your data. Particularly if you have large numbers
of projects this will be an issue.

thanks for the reply Laurie! the problem is that there are 2 guys
in the
office who use acad, the rest use microstation... we are moving
our server
to a new one, and the microstation guys and the administrator do
not want a
separate "parent" folder for only LDD projects... we put the
following
folders under our project #: archdwg (for architects drawings),
design (for
all design drawings), letters (for all letters about the
project), and a
couple others.. we want to add LDD to this project folder... how
could this
cause conflicts besides it seeing it as the same name?? we want
the sub
folders to be stored under LDD (align, cogo, cr, dtm, etc....)
and not under
the parent project folder... do u know what im asking?? look at
the attached
picture of our directory structure that we hop for... thanks
again!!!

SEVE-O:

Replies to topics like this can get wordy (something I hate to do is type
more then I already do) so I'll keep it short.

My company uses a structure almost identical to yours and we too recently
upgraded. We did what you are talking about doing (using a folder called
LDD3 under the project folder). My company is about 100+ with about 40 of
use doing drafting. We used that system for 3 weeks. At that point we
realized how big of a mistake we had made. Better to realize the mistake
and fix it though then live with the burden for the next umpteen years.

Something you should think about. Is there any reason you have to have your
project related stuff (dtm, cogo, align, etc. folders) in the root project
folder? It isn't like Microstation is going to use that information (is it?
I've never used it). You can still put the drawings for that project in
your root project folder. Just the softdesk related stuff (dtm, cogo,
align, etc.) will be somewhere else.

We made a big mistake because we didn't understand the ramifications of
doing it the way we did it (the way you are going to do it). I hope that
you really think about what you are doing before you make the decision to
stick with what your walking into.

If you have any questions, my # is at the bottom, feel free to call me
(that's how strongly I feel about it).
