Error: Class 'AcMapDMSc

Hello everyone. I know that this is like beating the proverbial dead horse, but one of my co-workers removed his civ3d 2008 install and it somehow managed to break his 2006 land desktop installation.
Upon open of Land 2006, it immediately starts to error out in the following message sequence.
Unhandled Exception C0000005 (Access Violation reading 0x0000 at address 61196189h
Followed by:
Fatal Error: Class 'ACMapDMScale' parent named 'AcMapDMGroup' not found.
The error reporter says there are fixes available, and takes me to a generic download page.
Both service packs for this product (SA and Companion) fail and report that it is not for this product. I have copied files mentioned from a functioning install in hopes that the original was corrupt. This still produced the same error. I have attempted a repair fuction from the change/remove.
This is a Dell Precision 390 with XP sp3 and 4GB of ram. User is an admin of the workstation. I think land 2006 map is installed and a few survey plugins.
Recovering this would be greatly appreciated. Uninstall of the product is not an option unless there is 110% positively no hope.
