Description Keys - Lines dont Finish and Text After the Description

I am having a problem figuring out how to get the desc. key to finish drawing a line when another point description is collected just before the original line has ended (i.e. you collect a back of curb, and then a edge of pavement, then you end the back of curb and the line does not connect to the last point).

Also for points that extra descriptions are given for (i.e. FL 4', where the description key is FL*) are connected in the order the points are collected not by the description key. For example you collect a fence line as FL 4' and then collect a ground shot, then continue the fence. This causes the line to connect from the fence to the ground shot and back to the fence.

There can be a couple of reasons the lines aren't being drawn. It would be helpful if you could post the raw data and the fieldbook files.

For some reason it will not allow me to attach any of the files. In the Field book file the last shot on a line is being put in the wrong section, that is the cause for the line not finishing. I am just unsure how it needs to be coded in order for the line to continue to the end. The same problem in the field book is happening for the description key with a note after.

Are you putting the linework codes in a note field or are you including the linework code in the description?

If you can't upload the file, try copy and paste into your post.

The codes are in the description. The problem comes when we want to add notes in the description (i.e. B FL 4', FL 4', ...) the note in the description that describes the fence as a 4' fence causes the linework follow the order the shots were taken in not the description key.

Here is an example of the description coding we use:

The codes should then be converted (by survey link) to the following fieldbook

Note that the conversion program adds a continue FL before the NG shot. This is probably what is happening with yours. We have seen a problem with doing line codes with spaces. Our crews are instructed to begin a line with a code (B FL4FT) and then continue with that exact code for the remainder of the line. We also do not use punctuation marks in codes as they tend to cause problems.

Also the description keys have nothing to do with how the program converts to a field book and draws linework in LDD or C3D. The description keys only control points, symbols, groups, layers and labeling.

So you must use the same description with notes after it for everyshot on that line (i.e. FL4FT)? When I change the description with a note for only one point on the line it does not include that point in the line even though it begins with the description key (i.e. EPBROKEN). Thanks.

I have an affordable program I wrote that gets rid of all these kinds of headaches. It creates a fieldbook file from an ascii file with linework. It separates the linework and points, so no more morass of continues and ends. It allows taking curves out of sequence, double coding shots, beginning 2 lines from the same point ect......If your interrested in trying out a free version, contact me at sinjasoulian@yahoo.com.
