Conversion to Arc/Info - unique identifier needed

I would like to convert a .dwg file to ArcGIS where attribute data will be added. Once this has been completed, there may be future changes to the .DWG file (additions, attribute changes, etc) that I will want to capture but I don't want to reenter the GIS attributes for the previously converted data. Is there a unique object id or handle that is assigned to each feature in the .dwg that will not change even if there are additions to the file? I can use this unique identifier to relink my attribute data after a subsequent conversion.
Thanks for any help you can provide.

Mr. Steltman,

I thank you for answering my query but I am not really very familiar with AutoCad and thus I do not uderstand what your code is. Can you tell if that entity handle remains unique and unchanged for the life of the drawing? I have been told that it can change and I would like to find out under what circumstances it would do so.

Thanks very much,
Brauna

the handle remains unique in the drawing, but may change if the drawing is
inserted or attached as an XREF.
