Can no longer select objects BEFORE performing a command!!

I don't know what setting I may have changed, but this is starting to get time consuming. I can no longer select the objects I want to modify before I select the command.

Example: I choose 10 lines. Press Erase. Then it clears the lines and asks me to choose objects to erase. It used to just erase them. Or I would use the delete button on the keyboard. That no longer does anything. If I double click text nothing happens. It used to bring up the text editor box. Same for exploding objects, I can't pick the object before the command.

If anyone has a suggestion please let me know. I've changed user profiles, Shut down, restart, different drawings, etc. It works in AutoCAD 2005, but not in my Autodesk Land Desktop.

Thanks for any help.
