Multi-line text no longer visible/works

I've been running AutoCAD 2006 since it came out and have been running it on Windows 7 since it came out.    I've never had any problem runnning my LT version.  Today, all of a sudden I cannot type text in the multi-tex box. The cursor moves in the box but nothing is shown.  I click okay but cannot select anything.  It's like the cursor is moving but not laying down text.  I've changed the different fonts, colors and even changed my background from Black to While and still cannot see any text.

My single line text tool continues to work just not the multi-line text box.

I also tried restarting my computer and tried opening existing files.  The multi-line box problem occurs on other files to.

How should I trouble shoot this???  I'm baffled.

Dean,

What settings should I be looking at to fix this??  Any thoughts?

Your help is very much appreciated.  I am on deadline to finish a drawing and I'm about pulling my hair out.

I'm not sure what you typed for a response to my question 🙂

Change your active STYLE to STANDARD, does the problem go away?

At the command line, type MTEXTED, what does the program report? It should say Internal or show a period/dot.

Variable description is here: http://docs.autodesk.com/ACDLT/2011/ENU/filesACRLT/WS1a9193826455f5ffa23ce210c4a30acaf-4f39.htm

Dean,

I'm sorry if Im not following your requests.  You gotta take baby steps with me.

In the command line, I type " mtexted" and get the following response: "Enter new value for Mtexted, or for none <internal>".

I tried typing "Internal" but it does not fix  my problem.    I've tried changing my style to Standard but it does not fix the problem.  In fact, if I change it to Standard.  The cursor won't move at all when I type!

Any other settings I need to check?

Okay, I've uploaded a video to youtube showing my problem with my multiline text box.   I'm hoping for a fix here!

The video is bad but shows the issue.

As a temporaty work around, I've set Wordpad as my multiline editor.  This is NOT a good option as I have to save my work and close the editor every time.  If I change the editor (using the mtexted command) back to Internal, I have the same problem that I did before.  Either there is some kind of setting that I'm missing or something is corrupt.

Again, any help you can provide would be very appreciated!

MTEXTED, type it.

When asked, type . (that's a period, or dot, depends on your language approach to the symbol).

Now you are using the Internal editor.

It has not been asked what changed on the computer to suddenly make this happen?

OP - Did you try a System Restore to the night or two before to see if a Windows or other Update hosed the Text Editor?

Have you run a Registry Cleaner recently on the OS?

Dean yes, I've done that too.  The Internal editor is all messed up.  Where you able to understand what it's doing by watching the video?

Charles,

My system restore is not turned on, so I was not able to try to retore it to an earlier time.

To my knowledge I didn't do anything from what I usually have been doing.  The only abnormal thing that I did was rotate some mulititext.

Yes, I also ran a registry cleaner, re-booted, etc.   I just don't know where the problem is.

Pop the LT disc in, it will eventually prompt to reinstall ore repair, try the repair first, then the reinstall.

Dean,

Do you know if re-installing over my current install will reset my custom settings?

I will try the repair first but I'll have to try it later today.  I'm working on a deadline right now.

It will normally do that, so back up and document everything you need to recover.

I assume that just the repair option won't mess up my custom settings but a full reinstall will??

I've backed up my custom menues and tools before but forget in what files those things are located.  Can you post information on backing up these important settings?

Thanks!

I was worried that doing a repair install was going to wipe out my custom menus, etc.   I then realized that I could test this out on my laptop install.  I up in the 2006 LT version and found that it doesn't have a repair option!  It also won't let me install over the existing version.  It suggests that I need to first unisnsall the program before I again install it.  So, I guess that's what I'm going to have to do.

Can someone please instruct me on what program files I should be saving so that I can quickly get things back up and running as I preferr.

Thanks again for your help!

After backing up all my "stuff" I figured out how to repair the installation using window's Add / Remove programs.

A quick repair mended my multiline text issues.  It once again works!
