2009 has to recover files when opening those saved in older versions

We have currently updated from LT 2004 to LT2009. If I try to open a file that I have not yet opened in 2009, it requires that I recover the file, rather than open it directly. There has rarely been any errors found. I have to close all other documents to recover that file. Any help?

Install update 1. This is supposed to help with this issue. DO NOT install update 2 - there are known crashing issues with this update that Autodesk is working on.
