Some revision on basics...

All, I'm using AutoCAD LT 2014.

I'm an occassional user and haven't used AutoCAD for 1.5 years.

So I'm gonig back to basics.

I'm having the following trouble:

When I create a rectangle, after selecting the first point I get the dynamic input panel appear (great so far).

I've set in preferences for the dynamic input panel to always show cartesian coordinates as I mainly do schematic work (also great so far).

I've read that in this situation the dynamic input panel defaults to relative coordinates, which I'd expect (also good, although I could use @ too).

Now, this is where I'm getting confused.

When I type in the relative coordinates, 200 tab 200, I expect a square of dimensions 200X200 relative to the location of the first selected point.

That's not what I'm getting...  WHY!?!?

Instead I get something that appears to be relative to the WCS/UCS.

I can't believe I've fogorten how to draw a simple box... 😞

Does the Rectangle begin where you expect it to?  Are you in WCS and Plan view?  Can you post a screenshot (including your command line)

You need to type:
@x,y of you want the second point to be relative to the first click.
#x,y if you want it to be an absolute location.

Typing neither symbol before x,y makes you a patsy to the software instead of the master of your universe (or AutoCAD at least) 🙂

Double-check your Pointer Input Settings (in the Drafting Settings dialog, same place where you specificied Cartesian coordinates). Make sure it actually has the Relative radio button selected.

Thanks everyone for the tips.

Unfortunately I've got a bigger problem right now, my BOOTCAMP partition is not booting.

So I haven't had a chance to try your solutions.  But I haven't forgotten about this thread.

I will be back shortly with an update.

Thanks again,

Paul
