Scaling objects in x or y only

Is there any way to scale an object (or group of objects) in x or y only, without having to make them into blocks first?

If not, this would seem to be a major omission on Autodesk's part...

Block only, it's the only entity type that could scale in only one
direction.

Are you perhaps wanting something else in the other entity types?

There would be no X or Y only scaling in those entities, that's the problem.
Scale is not the correct tool.

You seek LENGTHEN command or STRETCH or EXTEND, or something else.
