I have plotscale field inserted in my layout titleblock, but when it updates (plot preview or plot) it updates the page setup scale 1:1 (1”=1’-0”) not the viewport scale. Is there a way to reference the viewport scale? Are there property settings for linking a viewport with this field?
You answered your own question: a FIELD simply points to an object and reads the info you assigned it to read.
So what did you assign the FIELD to read exactly?
I'm not sure you can do what you want with a nested FIELD in a block since you actually have to point the FIELD to the specific viewport first for it to work.
Thanks for your reply… I was not aware that I could assign the field. I assumed the plotscale field was “fixed” only being able to insert it where its value was the plot scale…? How is it assigned?
To get something that looks like: Scale 1"= 50', etc below the viewport, create either text or mtext and right click to insert a field. For the field category select object in the left panel. In the middle panel click the icon at the top for an object and select the viewport. Below that in the middle panel select either Custom or Standard scale (whichever works best) and verify the preview/format settings in the far right panel.
As Dean notes, you need to do this for each individual viewport. There's no way (I know of) to automate it.

Thanks, “ralstogj” your method works fine, just what I was looking for… No speculation, and there is nothing to assign!
Whatever helps you understand the process is what works. My description above is virtually identical to what you found in that video. It just doesn't bother with the diesel expression stuff.
You actually did what we all noted: glad you found a video to walk you through it too.
You should have tried to help others by posting a link though, instead of choosing to praise help from others then keeping it a secret. Here is the link for others that need the same help:
