Pickfirst doesn't help

I am running LT 2002 and have used the delete key on my Microsoft Office
keyboard to delete objects since I started using AutoCAD LT in 1995. It has
never failed to operate correctly.

For some reason, while trying to finish some drawings this weekend, the
delete key will no longer erases objects.

After highlighting an object, I get the error beep when I depress the delete
key. I can delete an object using the erase icon on the toolbar, but it's a
pain in the neck when you're used to using the delete key.

I did check the "PICKFIRST" setting and found it to be "1" which is the
default setting. In an effort to fix the problem I did change the PICKFIRST
setting to "0" and then back to "1", rebooting between changes. The
PICKFIRST changes occur properly, I just can't get the delete key on the
keyboard to work.

BTW I did check the operation of the delete key in other programs and even
went so far as to try a different keyboard. The keyboard is fine.

Any help would greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
