... in such a way that it is really there in model space and not just a link to the external file?

Copy/Paste: use the camera tool in your PDF viewer to capture the image. There are OLE limitations though, but you'll discover them soon enough.

Thanks; I'll try that the next time it comes up. The boat has sailed this time, though; I zipped the pdfs up into a folder with the dwg and sent it out.
