HELP! Cad 2006 lt R12 Problem

We are running Autocad LT 2006 on a windows XP proff SP2, and when we go to save as an R12 the program crashes with the message
Runtime Error!

Program C:\Program Files\Autocad LT 2006\aclt.exe

This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way.
Please contact the application's support team for more information.

Have phoned autodesk many times, with no help, they have heard of this problem but no fix. Does anyone have any idea how to fix this at all.

Do you have 2006 set to save to a lower version of AutoCAD?
That can sometimes be the issue.

Sometimes running AUDIT, RECOVER and -PURGE (note the dash)
with all of it's options to remove file issues helps some
files.

Sometimes running DXFOUT to R2000, then importing and DXFOUT
to R12 fixes things too.
