Extending Trimming stupid question

This may sound stupid but I am sure I use to extend and trim where the
extension does not actually intersect and the trim does not actually
intersect but I cannot seem to do it now. I have gone through all the help
and cannot seem to figure out what I have done to change it. When I try to
do it now I get the message "object does not interesect" Help Me!

This is nice. AutoSketch works this way.

> I get the message "object does not interesect" Help Me!

LT 98 has always given me this message. In LT it seems the lines must
intersect for this to work. (If there is a way around this, I would like to
know too)

Here's another question - why are trim and extend separate commands? I often
trim several lines to another line. Some need the extend because they too
short and others need the trim because they are too long.

Look up the EDGEMODE system variable.

I did and that is the key I think but I don't quite understand what they are
saying. It basically says that what I want the program to do is possible but
I cannot seem to figure it out. And I know I have had the program set up
like this before. I could extend and trim in free space with no
intersection. Thanks again

Yes I saw that but I am confused at what I am to do, my program used to just
do it without having to enter anything. Maybe I am missing something here,
when you say edgemode=1 what am I suppose to do to run in edgemode. Thanks
again

Just set EDGEMODE to 1, and it will behave the way you want. The EDGEMODE
variable exists so that you can have either behavior. What more do you need
to know?

Ok Paul, I must be seriously in trouble here but here is the stupid
question, how do you set the variable to 1, I have tried different ways and
gone through the help guide and cannot seem to figure out how to set it to
1. Sorry!
And a big thanks for your help
Paul

On the command line at the bottom of the page it should say - Command:

type in EDGEMODE and hit enter

It will then say New value for EDGEMODE <0>:

Type 1 and hit enter.

If you are accustomed to windows programs that have a window with check blocks
for all of your options, you may overlook the command. Unfortunately, it seem
many of AutoCADs features are only accessible through the command line.

As to why the value changed for you? It is a windows program so sometimes
things change for seemingly no reason. Go figure.

Paul T.

Thanks for the Edgemode command. It will sure make trimming alot easier.

Paul

You are my hero today, thank you so kindly. I have never had to deal with
this before, now I can extend and trim up a storm!
Thanks again

You can also set EDGEMODE "on the fly" during execution of the TRIM or
EXTEND command; after selecting the trimming objects, you should see a
prompt that includes several options, including Edge; type E (for Edge) and
then you'll get a choice of "Extend" and "No extend", which will be
remembered until you change it again -- just like setting EDGEMODE directly.

BTW, all of this information is in the Command Reference section of the HELP
system.
