"Drawing file is not valid."

This drawing appears visible in preview, but all type of AutoCad versions (full, LT from 2006 to 2013) claim it is unvalid.

It may have heavy gradients in it.

Would there be any way to recover this file?

The Preview is a static snapshot image buried in the DWG file when it was last saved. It is not and never has been in any way, shape or form a look inside a DWG file. You are misinformed.
Post it here for others to try and in the meantime fund it's BAK file to rename and recover, or your backup of the DWG file from a day or week before, and look to see if there is an autosave file you can recover too.
