X Ref-Layers naming

have a drawing, not produced by myself. the base build is X refed, after a fair amount of alteration, in to several drawings according to disipline.
the client does not like X ref's. so the X ref is bound. The layers now have excessively long names. They start with the X Ref's name, then the original layer name. as i now need to turn of various layers it is a pain as i can not see the important part of the layer name. Is there a way i can shorten the layer name without renaming every layer, at over 100 layers this would be a pain. I do realise that I could base copy, but at the moment i would rather be using Xrefs
Thanks in advance

Xref binding has two options: the sloppy default that does that to layer
names, and the 'other' INSERT selection which would have done a better job
of it.

If it's not too late, and you did not decimate the only copies you had, redo
the binding and stop hurting your self just to save a step :))

Or explore RENAME command, it allows wild cards.
