PDF missing some symbol fonts

Is this issue I'm having with AutoCAD 2010 LT just my problem or has anyone
else seen this happen when using symbols with Comic Sans MS font in PDF plot
files?

We have been using Comic Sans MS true font in AutoCAD since version 2000 all
the way to 2009 LT without any font problems when generating drawings in PDF
format (standard DWG to PDF. pc3 plot). Now with AutoCAD 2010 LT some
symbols no longer work (diameter for one). I can take the same dwg file to
AutoCAD 2009 LT and not have the problem. I converted the text to ISOCPEUR
true font and the symbols work. It seems to be related to the COMIC SANS
MS font. I hate to think that our library of company standard details will
all need to be converted to another font type, plus any older drawings as
needed.

The attached file is what I see when opening the TEXT TEST.PDF plot file.

A row of dots appears in the lines of text that contain the missing symbol.
I am using Adobe Reader 9 to view the pdf file.

Suggestion?
Thanks
...Gary

The error message simply states Adobe Acrobat PDF Reader cannot find the
font on the PC it is being used on.

Adobe Reader is not an Autodesk product and is not fixable from AutoCAD:
what did you use for pdf creation and how do you have fonts being handled?
Most likely, not the same ways or settings in 2009 or earlier.

The way I create the drawing in PDF format is to plot the layout with the
standard "DWG to PDF.pc3" plotter option, "plot extents", "fit to paper",
"OK". That is all we have ever done. The font was assigned in text style
for the drawing using the "Format" "Text Style" "Font Name" "ComicSansMS"
"Apply" from the menu.

This happens on all the CAD stations in the office, none of which have are
running anything different from each other. All XP-PRO SR3, all at AutoCAD
2010 LT (standalone version).

When 2010LT was installed, the migration from previous release (2009LT) was
selected and loaded successfully. After staring up 2010LT, I selected my
work settings options that migrated form 2009LT and called up a few drawings
and library parts. Everything appeared quite normal and usable. Took the
tutorial to see what was new and went to work. We use a very vanilla
install because life is much easier from version to version and that works
for our shop. I have never loaded nor customized fonts, just use what comes
with the system.

I know that Adobe Reader is not part of AutoCAD, but what is generating the
.pdf file within the AutoCAD plot module? That would be where the fonts are
assigned to for the plot output, right? It's like some symbols are just not
getting defined/assigned. Drawings that were done before 2010LT work fine
until you add or edit text that contains a symbol, then the font error
occurs and you get a row of dots.

I think that the problem is that older versions of the AutoCAD DWG to
PDF treated text as graphics so no matter what font you used at
creation times it got put into the PDF file as dots. The later driver,
including the A2009 bonus driver treated text as vector entities
resulting a much smaller PDF file, but to display the PDF file correctly
the original fonts must be on the machine viewing the PDF file. There
is a lot to be said for only using Windows standard fonts when you sent
files of any type to others.

I am having the same problem with AutoCAD 2010

When I use the export PDF function and the Arial or Verdana fonts (possibly others too) adobe gives the error message. For example with the arial font I get:

"Cannot find or create the font "ArialMT"

There appears to be no ArialMT font in the windows font directory, but there is an arial.ttf

However when I print to the cutepdf printer the file opens fine and all of the text displays.

Any suggestions on how to resolve this issue?

if you are on subscription send a support request to Autodesk.

As George noted in his reply, 2010 AutoCAD is exporting your font definition
to the PDF (cutePDF does not do that).

If the font you use is ARIALMT, no program on the planet is going to convert
it on it's own to one called ARIAL.

Change fonts to something common or change pdf creation methods.

Open the PC3 file (plottermanager command has been around in all the older
versions you listed), go to settings, find where font handling options are
stored, set it to capture none.

Go into the custom properties for the DWG to
PDF.pc3 file.  Select the Edit Font List... button.  Select the fonts
that are giving your errors.  By selecting these fonts you are including
the font definition with the PDF file. This will make the PDF slightly larger
but you shouldn't get any more errors.

Thanks for the suggestions. AutoCAD support gave the following answer which seems to have resolved the issue:

1. Go to Plot Dialog> Choose your PDF plotter

2. Click on Properties

3. A Plotter Configuration Dialog opens up.

4. Click on Custom Properties under the Device and document Settngs tab

5. Select "Capture all " for Font Handling in DWG to PDF Properties dialog

Thanks ShayBrazier7860 & Dean Saadallah for the fix to my problem with the
missing fonts. Everything is functioning the way it was before in previous
versions of AutoCAD LT. This make life a whole lot better.

The plot manager brings up the same properties dialog box so either methods
works the same.

Hello!

I also have the same problem with ACAD MEP 2011.

But, when I try to create PDF file from DWG file in ACAD 2008, then there are no problems, no messages!!

I use custom made DWG to PDF.dwg file, which has all the settings set OK (that means paper size set to 1050x2500, Standard quality and such).

When we, in the office, create PDF's from DWG's we use Publish option. Then we import created "DWG to PDF.dwg" file and there are no problems, when created within ACAD 2008.

But, as I said, the message appears when created with ACAD 2011.

So, I don't think it the Adobe Acrobat problem, but maybe some ACAD 2011 PDF drivers. Or at least, something like that.

Any ideas on this"

Thanks guys!

I had the same problem in 2011 but the "capture all" solution worked fine.

Some of the other suggestions above were not really suitable because it was not a font selection issue and the PDF was not viewable on the same machine it was created on. AutoCAD would substitute ArialMT for Arial when certain characters were included and mess up the PDF. Why do you need a special font for the squared symbol or the letter Q?

hello,  I found the way to solve this problem its quite easy....

once you have selected the dwg to pdf printer:

1- click on properties

2-select the device and document settings

3-click the + button on the custon folder to open and then click on the custom properties

4-on the custom acces dialog window, click on custom properties

5-about the middle of the new window there is a section called font handling, select the option "capture some", and then click "edit font list"

6- a font list will appear and then you can select the ones you need or click select all

7-click "OK" all the way back to the plot window and it will ask you if you want to save the changes for that document only or set them for the autocad program, select what you need.

hope it works fine for everyone!!

If you have Acrobat you can also de-embed the fonts and re-embed if desired. Sometimes that can fix font issues if you are combining multiple documents.

We are ripping PDFs using Adobe CPSI. Getting PDF files with font problems from different customers I am sure that Autodesk HAS a font problem. EACH support ticket regarding PDF font problems has a producer like pdfplot1x.hdi.

Maybe someone from the Autodesk helpdesk should contact someone from Adobes helpdesk and talk about font issues.

If you don't have problem files give me a mail. I can not attach the files here because they are copyrighted by others.

The embedded FONTS issue must be corrected by the file creator, NOT the file recipient: both Adobe and Autodesk to date allow the publisher/author of the document full control, not the recipient/reader.

Until the fundamentals of PDF creation change (not likely), it will remain a fact.

Thanks for the solution mikeaarq

I had the same problem this week.

I have AutoCAD 2011 full (in french), and I try to export, not plot, a drawing in PDF with the exportpdf command .

I don't use exotic font, just Arial, but in French there is a lot of accented characters (é, è, à, ç ...).

In the PDF, all the lines without accented characters were good, and all the lines with accented characters were replaced with a serie of dots.

When I open my PDF with acrobat, i have a error message: "Cannot fin or create the font ArialMT", although I only use Arial.

Then I try your solution.

1 - Start to plot the drawing

2 - Select "DWG To PDF.pc3" printer

3 - Choose "Properties"

4 - In the tab "Device and document settings", clic on the + button on the custon folder to open and then click on the custom properties

5 - On the custom acces dialog window, click on custom properties

6 - In the middle of the new window, in the section called font handling, select the option "capture some", and then click "edit font list"

7 - In the font list that appear, clic "Select all", to have all the font

8 - Then click "OK" all the way back to the plot window.

Now it works fine, thanks a lot.

But there should be an easier solution for users.

You need to use different font. Instead of Arial use @Arial Unicode MS. Problem solved.

3. Add or Configure Plotters button

4. select "DWG To PDF" PC3 file

5. select "Device & Document Settings" tab

6. select "Custom Properties" from the tree in upper part of window. By doing so it opens the "Access Custom Dialog" section in lower section of the window

7. push "Custom Properties" button.

8. select "Capture all" & pick "As geometry"

9. select ok @ bottoms of windows to close your way out.
