Overwriting blocks

Is it possible to bring in a block from another drawing so that it
overwrites the block of the same name in the current drawing? The only way
I know how to do this is to explode the block, bring it into the current
drawing and then make a block so that it overwrites the one in the current
drawing. This is a long method of doing it. Any idea of a quicker way to
do this?

Only way to insert a block that is inside another dwg is through the Design
Center.
Browse to the dwg and go to the "Blocks" section.
Then drag n' drop the block to the current drawing.
Drag with right mouse button if you want the insert dialog.

-insert
block=file

, or you can do it from the insert dialog by selecting a filename by
browsing, then specifying a different block in the Name field. AutoCAD will
ask if you want to redefine the block.

the way that i do it is but using the copy to clipboard from the original drawing and then pasting into the new drawing.

one thing to watch out for though is that it can change the new inported block into the old (existing block in drawing)

more like; it DOES change the new imported block into the old...

and that is exactly the problem. im sure thats why this question was asked and none of these answers indicate that it is possible to do.

at this stage i am deleting all instances of the block concerned, then purging the drawing, then dragging the newly modified version of the block in from another drawing using design centre.

This thread is 10 years old, Use design centre, make sure your old drawing is the active one, go to the new version of the block in design centre and right click on the new version of the block, The sub menu will let you 'redifine' or 'insert and redifine' the new block to replace  / update the old block.
