When I move a hatch boundary around unassociated hatch, it leaves the hatch pattern behind. If I then pick the hatch the grip points become available so that I can move the hatch to the new boundary.
The problem is that often the new boundary has a few more bends in it - SO, how do I add extra grips to the hatch to follow a new outline rather than redefine it from scratch? Is it even possible?

I don't have 2012 in front of me, but does the hatch object have the rectangle grip at the midpoint between the main vertices of the hatch object, as shown here?

Yes, the mid-point grip is there.
Using your 5 sided example, what if you turn it into a 7 sided figure - that's what I'm trying to do in essence, only on a larger scale hence trying to avoid starting the hatch process again.

I saw your example, but didn't see it - I missed the menu that said add vertex.
I've never noticed it before, guess I don't hover enough!!
