Deleting LAYERS with hidden objects

Does anyone know how to search and location hidden objects which prevent a given layer from being deleted? I have had this problem for awhile. Using PURGE will not delete layers containing objects. Sometimes I have layers which contain an object with multiple layers. When I turn off all other layers this layer shows up as blank, however, PURGE will not delete it. I have found these hidden blocks by chance, but would like to be able to track them down. I have tried LIST but this doesn't do the trick, are there any other utilities which would let me find these hidden blocks??

Any Help?

Turn all layers on/thawed/unlock. Zoom Extents. Save. WBLOCK command,
manually window select everything on screen, make a new file. See if that
helps.

Another option: INSERT one of these mystery blocks, explode it (turn all
layers on/thawed/unlocked first). Move the entities to Layer 0, redefine the
block. Repeat the process for all blocks you think are the cause. You should
then be able to purge those layers.

LT does not have the programming ability to handle complex solutions like
what you seek: it might simpler to rename the layers you cannot get rid of,
and live with them.

Thanks for the reply. WBLOCK did not work.

The drawings I have the problem with are over 5 megs and have quite alot of detail. When I find a problem block I can fix it, finding it is the problem.

I would think the problem would be common...if you create a block with elements from different layer and move the block to a different layer, turning the layer off turns the block off, but the "other" elements from other layers are what's causing the problem.

Does anyone know how to search for the block which prevents the purge?

BLOCK command pop-up has a list of all blocks in your drawing file.
-BLOCK command with the ? response also gives you a list.

Yes it is a very common problem, but you did not give Autodesk enough money
for a cure: LT does not have the programming resources to tackle and correct
the problem, only full AutoCAD does.
If you have access to a copy of Full AutoCAD you can fix this: either use
LAYMRG or LAYDEL if it has Express Tools on it, or you can access several
other third party solutions like SUPERPURGE that only work with full version
AutoCAD.
