Character Spacinq

I am using AC LT 2008.

When inputting Single Line Text or Multiple Line Text I want to reduce the space between characters.

I mean the space to the left and right of the characters.

I do not mean the space between the lines of characters.

In typography this is called kerning.

In MS Word this is known as condensing.

I am using Times New Roman as my font of choice.

In Autocad it is known as WIDTH FACTOR. In Mtext it's to the right of the icon bar which appears above the text. In single line text you can change it in PROPERTIES.

And you can create a Text Style with a Width Factor less than 1 if you wish.

There is no kerning ability in AutoCAD: the above tips simply smash the width of the letters (an spaces between them at the same time) if that's a look you want.

Increasing or decreasing the "Tracking" value will get you the desired outcome, without stretchcing/squishing the width of the characters. Be aware that this parameter is only available to Mtext objects.

I didn't mess with tracking for years and therefore also thought that AutoCAD did not have this ability, but I was plesantly surprised when I stumbled upon this recently!

The one answer that seems to be for me is the one about Tracking.

I do not know how to implement Tracking.

Is that a feature that is available in AC LT.

I don't have 2008 to test, but in 2010 it's on the contextual Mtext Formatting panel, in the flyout section. The button looks like a lowercase "a" and "b" with a dot in between them, in case you can find it on your text editing toolbar.

You can also use the control code \Tn; where "n" is a number representing your spacing (1 is normal, 2 is double normal, etc.) Note that you have to use a different editor to apply these kind of codes; see here for details.
