Cant pan with wheel on new microsoft 3500 mouse

My old microsoft mouse died and i replaced it with a new 3500.  For some reason, i cant get it to pan when i use the wheel button.  it zooms fine with the wheel... just wont pan.  I tried changing the wheel function in Control Panel... unfortunately Pan isn't an option for "program specific" functions.  The ACAD help section lists pan as the only function with the wheel button.

Any help would greatly be appreciated.

Tim

Didn't know that command... but yes, it is set to 1.

Amazing how often I pan.  Been drawing almost all day using the sliders.  It's slowed me down by a solid 50%.

I've got wheel button set to Autoscroll in the MS Mouse dialog. With MBUTTONPAN set to 1 I can hold down the wheel and pan.

So your not getting that action?

All that happens in ACAD with the wheel button is that it brings up a thumbnail view of all my open applications & files.  I'm running Windows 7.

In the MS Mouse software that middle button when set to Instant Viewer will do this when clicked.

What do you have the middle button set to in the MS Mouse software?

If you do not have a desktop icon for the software you can get to it thru Control Panel, Printers and Other Hardware, Mouse...

I was able to fix this by doing the following...

(I'm using the Microsoft 3500 mouse, AutoCAD 2012, Windows 7)

Open the Control Panel on your computer --> Choose Mouse

Check the box next to Enable program-specific settings.

Choose the Settings... button.

Add AutoCAD in the programs list.

Change the drop down for wheel button to say 'Middle-Click'

Apply

Ok

Pan should work now! 🙂

I know this won't help you now, but I'll tell you how I solved all my Microsoft mouse problems long ago:

I started buying wireless Logitech mouses.  Smiley Tongue  They're on all my computers now and every single one has worked with AutoCAD perfectly right out of the box.

Wow the same thing happens for me using MS Mice! Who woulda thunk!

I prefer MS Mice because I do not like the detentes in the Logitech wheel. To each his own.

Unfortunately I'm a packrat, which means I have a drawer filled with defective/broken/unusable Microsoft mouses to remind me why I suffer the ergonomics of the Logitech design.  When faced with a choice between something reliable that "just works" and something not... well, it's no contest.  Smiley Wink

I struggled thru this for over a day and came to the following conclusion:

The default values for my MS 3500 mouse with Intellipoint 8.2 drivers (and the MBUTTONPAN=1) worked as intended -- out of the box.  I didn't notice the proper results until I pressed the middle button/wheel EXTREMELY HARD.

Of course, I "clicked" the middle button many times, expecting it to pan with little effort.  Turns out, the pan click is/was embedded deep in the bowels of my mouse.

This undocumented "feature" is very annoying.

There is something to be said for a good quality 'basic' 3-button/roller mouse (or trackball if you prefer) that feels good to use in your own hand, but then let Windows run it and not load/use the fancied-up driver that comes with it.

Trouble-free use inside AutoCAD trumps any Windows 'features' a driver offers for everywhere else IMHO.

I am guessing that many folks assumed that driver setting(s) were the culprit for the mouse click with the center wheel not working correctly, but they were not pressing hard enough. This was my issue and might explain others' quandries that are/were seemingly unsolved.   -- JDC

A few current "new" mouse devices have a mushy middle button feel (side motion feature most likely) and it's hard to engage: hence my comment about a 'basic' good quality mouse with no flashy claims or abilities.

The scoll wheel on my Microsoft Mouse 1383 tilts left and right.  It allows you to pan in Revit.  Your 3500 series might do the same in ACAD.  You can change its sensitivity in Control Panel --> Moues--> Wheel tab.

Hello

I'm using the left-right tilt scrolling to copy-paste.

Great productivity.

Go to mouse control panel settings in windows

Go to Microsoft mouse and keyboard center

For the action associated with the middle mouse button, select middle-click (you may find the option under "view all commands"

Once this is set make sure autocad mbuttonpan is 1

Hi @Anonymous,

I don't think the OP will be back to mark this thread seeing that it has been a few years.

Though I'm sure other users will find this helpful.

Thanks for posting your suggestion.
