Tools -Quick Select - use the filter criteria to pick all blocks with the block name you want and then check your properties window to see how many blocks you have picked.

I have 40 different block names each block has about 30 instances. so I dont want to q-select 40 times and type in the name. isn't there a way to list the names and quantities of all the blocks in the drawing at the same time?

"BCOUNT" is the one. I just forgot about it. Thanks for your quick response though.

Depending upon which release of AutoCAD and Express Tools you are using,
BCOUNT is a viable utility, but be careful if you have nested blocks or
xref'd blocks.
You also might want to look at EATTEXT and realize that the blocks do not
have to have attribute definitions in them in order to use this command to
gather information about the blocks, nested blocks or xref'd blocks.

To make a table of all the blocks on your drawing and their quantities:
(Tools>>Attribute Extraction>>Next>>Next>> -if you want the number of all the blocks press Next--if you dont need to know all the blocks numbers then >> tick the box exclude blocks without attribute>> choose the needed blocks- >>Next>>Next>>Next>>Finish. ^_^
Good Luck
