wd.env file path question

I am having problems modifying the wd.env file. My question is this: What is the proper format for specifying the various variable paths? In the wd.env file, there are examples but some of the examples use forward slashes (/) and some use back slashes (\). What would be the proper format for: %PF_DIR% = "c:/Program Files/Autodesk/Acade 2005/",base install folder %SL_DIR% = o:/acad2005/acade/libs/,libs folder WD_LIB,%SL_DIR%/jic125;%SL_DIR%/pneu_iso125, schem and/or pneumatic syms - default paths And do you need quotes around file paths with spaces? Thanks, Jim Shipley

Nevermind... Use the forward slashes, and quotes with spaces. The problem I was having was when I specified the PF_DIR variable, it would not take it. I just left that one commented out, and it works OK. Thanks Jim "Jim Shipley" wrote in message news:4141b48b_2@newsprd01... > I am having problems modifying the wd.env file. I am having problems with my wd.env file and am hoping somebody can give some good advice.
The path to get to the files I need to reference on our network have both a comma and a space. I see that I need to put quotes around the spaces, but how do I deal with a comma?
I received advice from AutoDesk tech support who told me there were no syntax errors in my env file except that I needed to change the forward slashes to backward slashes. This did not help.
When I try to load the env file with the space and comma in the path, AutoCAD Electrical 2007, stops functioning correctly. I can still do many things, but I am unable to edit any components or footprints, cannot do any project management, title block updates, surf, etc. No amount of repairing will work. It takes a complete uninstall and reinstall of ACADE to get it working again.
Since this takes some time, I would really like to make sure that I have something with no known errors before trying again.
I've attached the file I'm using for you to check it out.

See if this works... add double quotes around the complete path that
includes a comma

BEFORE:
WD,\\Flag\DataCenter\Customers\Invie Consulting\Moorhead, MN\CAD\Current
Projects\Library Files\Master\Support,AutoCAD Electrical dialog files, xls
templates, and other support files

AFTER:
WD,"\\Flag\DataCenter\Customers\Invie Consulting\Moorhead, MN\CAD\Current
Projects\Library Files\Master\Support\",AutoCAD Electrical dialog files, xls
templates, and other support files

i also think i need to modify my env file.
firstly let me explain; i have a network drive called O:
at the moment i have moved my Acade2007 folder that is found under the user name (this contains the aedata which in turn has catalogs, plc, proj and the wd.env file). i then added a search path in the file menu of acade to point to the Acade2007 folder. i have now also added my lib's folder into the aedata folder as well.

now i have basically everything that needs to be networked in the one folder now. So what do i have to do to setup the paths etc; whether it be adding a path in the file menu or modifying the actual env file in the aedata folder?

thanks in advance

In the WD.ENV file you will find several places where AutoCAD Electrical is pointed to various places, for the project folder, symbol libraries, Menu files, etc. Each one of these will need to be changed to match your network path. The ENV file may be edited with any ASCII editor, just don't use MS Word because that will insert hidden characters into the file which will cause the file not to work. Also, be very careful to match the syntax of each line as any error there will cause a failure to work, too. Be certain to make a backup copy of it before making any changes. You may wish to print the ENV file before you begin making changes. Good Luck!

this has helped somewhat but i can't see which bits to change; it all looks rather complicated to me to be honest. i just wish that you could simply point to the mapped drive using the file menu in auto cad or something similar (maybe one for nate holt?).

i think this part of the software is way overcomplicated, indeed i was using electrical designer by aceri before this and i would have it networked in 5 mins flat!! it's a shame you have to go to all this trouble for what should be a really basic task in my opinion.

if someone can tell me the "actual" alterations i have to make i would much appreciate this.

One of the easiest ways to set AutoCAD Electrcial up for a shared
environment is to use the/create a network deployment. When you use this
method, you are able to choose to share the databases and symbols, what
location to share them in, whether you are using a network or stand-alone
licensing, and it would create an install for the other users to install
from so everything would be setup automatically. The env file would even be
in the same shared location and automatically be pointed to the correct
locations!!

Now, as you are attempting to make these moves manually, you can look to
the help file for some assistance as well. See the attached image (HELP >
ELECTRICAL HELP TOPICS > ADVANCED PRODUCTIVITY > SETTING UP AUTOCAD
ELECTRICAL FOR MULTIPLE USERS):

i have 3 stand alone systems at present, they all have different serial numbers on the cd package.

are you saying that the easiest way is to do some kind of network deployment instead? now would be the time to do this as i haven't yet got this software up and running; the three systems sit on 3 individual computers on there own local drives at present. would it be best to export the licences for safe keeping and the do a network install as you describe?

A network deployment is a simple way to setup the items you are looking
at to share (in many cases, it is the IT department who create this
deployment as it would be created on a server, so all users could access it
to run the install, as well as ensuring all the proper rights to place the
files to share and build the deployment). As you walk through and create
the deployment, you will have the option to state whether you are using/have
purchased either stand-alone individual licenses, or network license (the
reason I call your attention to this is because many people thing of the
"network deplyoment" method as only being an option if they are using
network licenses, and this is not the case).

So yes, if you are able to and still early enough in the process, I
would recommend giving the network deployment a try. What you will do is
walk through a wizard, selecting the various options, and the end result
will be a "new install" which is what will be used to install the product.
Everything will work and be the same as installing directly from the CD,
only by selecting to share the symbol libraries and databases, those will
not be present in the install as they were placed in the share location you
will specify during the deployment creation. Also, once the users have
installed from the "deployment" that was created, they will automatically be
setup, pointing and accessing the information from the share location you
specified during the deployment creation.

Give this a try and let us know how it goes!! Note that the deployment
could take some time to create....

I hope this helps!

the install went fine!!!
in actual fact it was very easy to set uo indeed to be honest. the only thing i would say is that when it asks what the default profile will be for client machines; leave it as the default <> as if you change this i found the acade menu load would fail and even if you manually load the cui file none of the icons would do anything.

i'd like to say a really big thankyou jared for this advice and maybe Autodesk should make it a little clearer that standalone users can in fact do a network deployment; rather than going to all the trouble of altering the standard wd.env file

thanks again :D Message was edited by: utchat

Can you attach or include what the command line is saying? You can hit
F2 to expand the view in order to see the history. A couple of other
things:

> If you had previously installed AutoCAD Electrical, did you uninstall it
> and remove any remaining files or folders?
> Did you select to share both the databases and the libraries when you
> created the deployment?
> Did you install from the deployment installation image that was created?
> Were there any errors or problems during installation?
> Do you have access to the share location? Can you go up to the location,
> save and delete files from it?? (A simple test would be to open Word,
> save a document to that location and then delete it from that location)
> If you go to TOOLS > OPTIONS, is that share location where you placed the
> files defined as a support path? Is it first in the list?
