Wire Source/Destination

I am trying to determine how AE08 decides which component is the source and which component is the destination when processing the "From To" list. I have not been able to see a pattern. I have looked for a hierarchy of components, sequence of placement in the dwg, and left-right / top-bottom flow in the model space. None of these seem to be consistently followed.

Our assemblers are directed to wire from the electrical source to the electrical destination. I.e. from the breaker to the contactor, from the contactor to the overload relay, from the overload relay to the motor. We would like AE to follow this convention.

In the end I want to pull the description of the Destination component into the "From To" list as a tool for anyone doing troubleshooting.

I know I'm asking for the moon but even if I just get a little moon dust I will be quite happy

Hello Mr. Shocker.

Right click on a wire, and have a look at Wire Sequence.

But I agree with you.. the default wire sequence, if you haven't specified anything, is kinda strange sometimes.

The From/To is based on the Location values you selected in the dialog. If a
Location is in both the From and the To listing them it will be hard for
AcadE to determine which is which. You can use wire sequencing as suggested
to define the direction.

Thanks, I was able to organize my From to list in a logical manner.

WRT the location values, the wires in question are all within a single enclosure so I don't have that control.

I was hoping that I could predict how AutoCAD determines sequence so I could minimize manually adjusting it after the fact. We have approximately 1000 connecting wires in each of our schematics so this may be a time consuming endeavor.

According to Autodesk you can control the sequencing in the project settings tab of the project properties dialogue, but I am still seeing random results.

Thanks again for brining me a large step forward in automating our design documentation.

I believe the sorting order is used strictly for tagging and wire numbering.
I don't believe it is used in the From/To. If they are in the same enclosure
I think you would have to use the wire sequencing to define the from/to. If
you had time and wanted to try some programming you could probably create a
program that would add the wire sequencing information based on the project
sorting setting. There are API calls that can add the xdata which is what
the wire sequencing uses.
