Sorting panel BOM by user1 description

Is it possible to sort the BOM on my drawing by the user1 data, then get the balloons updated?
Acade2006 - i have Access and Excel

One way to sort the BOM report by the user1 field would be in a user post.
You would write (I could get it started) the user post function and then
when the report is displayed in the dialog you would run the User Post and
select the option. This would then sort the data and bring you back to the
dialog from which you would insert it as a table. I am unclear on what you
mean by updating the balloons.

Pat, I've been playing with the bom for a panel, and I was hoping I could export the panel report "bill of materials" to a spread sheet and sort by user1 data (the export utility does not do user1).
I would then update the panel item numbers A,B,C,etc.,
then import the BOM back into my drawing.
The balloons attached to my panel components would be updated automatically?
IF you could get us started with a user post, that would be great.
We have some pretty sharp guys around here that could help once you get me going.

Maybe I am misunderstanding the feature you are using. Are you running a
Bill of Materials report or are you running the Export to Spreadsheet
feature? When you run a BOM report does the User1 column show in the report?
I added this column using the Change Report Format and then I exported it to
Excel using the Save to File feature. My Excel file has the User1 column.

The Export to Spreadsheet does not contain a User1 column because it is
extracting the data off the actual component. The User1 comes from the
catalog lookup and is pulled out only at the time a report is created. The
User1 from the catalog is not saved on the component anywhere.

If you are running the report I am afraid I don't see a way this will update
the balloons. You can assign the item numbers in the report but running a
report has no provision to write any data back to the components. The Export
to Spreadsheet can be used to write data back to the components but it
doesn't have the field you want to sort on.

Let me spend some time thinking about this and see if I can come up with
something that might work. The User Post will allow you to sort the report
by the User1 field but it won't write anything back to he components. What
version of AcadE are you using? There are some tools in AcadE 2007 that
might allow this to be done.

My BOM report looks fine, shows the user1 data.
Yes, we would like to write data back to the components.

Well, I know for sure the user post can do the sorting you want but I am not
sure we have the tools in 2006 to write some information back to the
baloons. Where do these item numbers come from that you want to write to the
balloons? They aren't on the panel components? What assigns them in the BOM
report? I am afraid I am still unclear on exactly what you are trying to
accomplish. Maybe you could provide more detail and then I can take some
time to see if I can think about it and run it by one of the other
developers to see waht we can come up with. Maybe if you sent me a before
and after drawing that you manually updated that would help. My direct email
is pat.murnen@autodesk.com.
