MULTIPLE CATALOG ITEM

ACADE '09: The new feature allowing the ability to put item numbers on the multiple catalog items is great, or it would be if I could figure out how to activate that part of the dialog box. It is greyed out on mine.
Does anyone know how to un-grey it out???

You have to set up your project for this. Right-click on the project name in
Project Manager and select properties. Select the Components tab. In the
Component Options section, select Item Numbering. In the Item Assignments
section, select Per-Part Number Basis (exclusing ASSYCODE Combinations).

Hope thise helps,

That is a project-level selection. Right-click on the project in your
project manager and click on the components tab. At the bottom of the
dialog click Item Numbering (see attached screen shot). You want the bottom
choice, per-part basis. The per component basis might make more sense if it
said per assembly. This is the default and is the way the program has
functioned in the past. It assigns a balloon to the top level component of
an assembly (i.e. fuse but not fuseholder, relay but not relay base or
retainer clips). So if you want the fuse to be something like item number
76 and the fuse holder to be 77, you must select item numbering on a
per-part basis. Otherwise the fuse is 76 and the fuse holder is part of the
76 assembly.

The upper section allows you to force AcadE to accumulate item numbers
across the project, rather than the default of per drawing. For example, if
you are in panel payout and you want to use the Panel Item Resequence to
auto-assign item numbers, it normally starts over for each drawing it
processes. This is normal for mechanical drawings where you put the BOM on
the drawing with the balloons. But if you are creating one BOM that
references multiple drawings, you need all of the balloon numbers to be
unique. Then you would want to select to accumulate project-wide and not to
reset with each drawing.

That worked great, but there is no quantity shown for the item. I even went back and entered a "1" in the count field, but no luck.
I am trying to tie an extended length operating shaft to a disconnect switch at the schematic level. There is no symbol for the shaft, but it is a seperate purchased part with a qty of 1 and needs to be included.

Once you engage per-part item numbering, go to the component symbol or
footprint for the disconnect and edit it. Click multiple catalog. Click
lookup to add the operating shaft from the catalog or just type in the MFG
and CAT directly into the appropriate fields. Enter the quantity in the CNT
field and the unit of measure in the Unit field. See attached.

I did that. I can get it to show up in my BOM, but there is no quantity. I entered it as Item "2" with "1" as the Count and "EA" as the Unit, and I get the line item to show up in the BOM as item #2, but no quantity.

Do you have the sub field in your report? Multiple Catalog entries shows up
as a sub qty. If you prefer not to use the sub field, you need to run the
post process that moves the sub qty to the qty field. See attached.

I do not have the sub field included because it tends to confuse the data entry people...
I have never seen the Post Process screen that you attached. How do I get to that? Also, do I have to run the report with the sub field included before I can run the post process routine? I can find nothing in the help file about it.

You do not need to run the report with the sub field included. The
post-process button is just above the Change Report Format button. See
attached.

Hint: The asterisk that precedes the sub qty means multiply. So to build a
3-phase fuse assembly it may take 3 * 1 of the fuse part number and 1 * 1 of
a fuseholder that holds 3 fuses.

Got it. The folder with the .lsp files was not in my search path, so every time I clicked the User Post button I got an error message. It works now. Thanks Doug, and thanks to Pat too (I haven't forgotten you were the first responder).
I don't suppose there is any way to make a drawing remember the report's post processes along with the other report settings. (If not, wish list.)
Thanks again.

You can create a foramt (.set) file to remember the report settings. Use the
Format File Wizard to set up all report options (except User Post - see
below). Then when you run the report, on the first dialog click the Format
button and then select the .set file you created. You can also use these
format files when using the Automatic Reports feature.

Some minimal support for defining a user post in a report format file was
added in AcadE 2009. By minimal I mean that you have to edit the .set file
directly to add the option because support was not added in the Format File
Wizard. And because it wasn't added to the wizard it isn't documented. Also,
you might have to edit the user post .lsp file. If you want to try this
feature I can help you get set up to try it.

Here are the steps -
1. Create the format .set file using the Format File Wizard for the report
it will be used with.
2. Using Notepad or something like that edit the .set file.
3. Add a line such as "User Post Process = #". Substitue the number of the
user post option. For example, say on the user post dialog it is the 2nd
option from the top so you would add the line "User Post Process = 2". The
quote marks are not used. This can become more complicated if the option
requires some parameters but for the BOM options I don't think they do.
4. Save the file.

Some of the user post .lsp files are already set up to handle this option
but not all. If you modify the .set file and then run the report and it
doesn't work (i.e. do the user post automatically), upload the .lsp file or
send it to me directly (pat.murnen@autodesk.com) and I can modify it to
recognize this option.

I hesitate to even mention any of this but since this minimal support is
there, even though not documented, I thought you might want to try it.

Thanks Pat. I am afraid that this will have to be put on the back burner for now. I have spent too much time trying to get it working already. After running my report I realized that it listed the sub items directly beneath the main item in the BOM regardless of the item number, even when sorted by item number.
Anyway, I am under the gun here so I have to drop that for awhile and work on a new and improved problem. Since I got '09 loaded I cannot get any of my motor contactors or motors to display the Description or User 1 fields in the BOM report. The info is in the catalog file, it just gets lost somewhere on its way to the report.
