Using ACADE 2014. Looking for JIC EStop Switch symbols but not having luck finding any. Are they hiding somewhere? If none supplied, has anyone created symbols for EStop buttons with TURN reset (single & double poled)? Appreciate any help.
E-stops are located in the Pushbuttons category of the icon menu. I would suggest using the more up-to-date NFPA library. The class designation letters are updated to match NFPA-79. JIC has been defunct since the late 1970s. It just took a while to phase it out. There are also a few more symbols available in the NFPA library, such as solid-state-relay, light-emitting diodes, complete Form-C contact, heater symbols, and more.
All that's under Pushbuttons are simple standard symbols. Nothing really specific to EStops like Turn reset, push reset, mulit-pole, etc..
How do I change to using NFPA symbols? Is that symbol set already installed? If a NFPA symbol set is available and JIC is outdated, why does ACADE use JIC as a default? Autodesk only gives JIC & IEC templates. Appreciate any guidance.
Go to Windows Control Panel as if you ate going to uninstall AutoCAD Electrical. But click on Add/Remove Features. You can add or remove manufacturer data and/or symbol libraries. When you add an additional library you also get the menu, sample templates, and sample projects that go along with it.
I wish Autodesk would default to NFPA for North America but they tend to leave things as they are.
Note: Don't install the IEEE library. It is not made correctly and even if it was it is not appropriate for industrial control schematics. It would cause confusion.
I got NFPA installed but it basically just has the same symbols as the JIC library. Why is this any better? I still don't have access to any real EStop button symbols.
As a bit of an aside, you can only use one symbol menu per project? So if you wanted to use symbols from 2 libraries in drawings for a project, you'd have to change the project properties back & forth to access the appropriate symbol menu? Seems like you should be able to setup a set of menu .DAT files and be able to switch those as needed directly from the icon menu. Just wastes time ... anyway ...
Does anyone have EStop symbols already created that they'd be willing to share? I really can't believe nothing is available in the symbol libraries to help with this. I really don't want to have to manually create symbols for standard components. Just about everyone is using EStops, so what are users doing? Are there any companies out there who create ACADE symbol libraries with a greater selection of needed components? How about any sharing sites? If anyone has info, please share.
JIC symbols are based on ANSI Y32.2. When NFPA assumed the responsibility for maintaining the standard, they continues to use ANSI Y32.2 symbols. The Class Designation letters (a.k.a. tag letters) have been modified over time by the NFPA. The NFPA library supplied with AutoCAD Electrical is up to date based upon NFPA-79.
You can only have one schematic icon menu active at a time. It isn't actually necessary to have more the one active. The symbols in the library folders are all named the same. So you could have the NFPA menu active, but have the IEC library folder first in the library assignment for the project. When you click an NFPA symbol from the menu, you get its IEC equivalent.
Hint: Create a folder named Custom Symbols parallel to the other symbol folders in the Libs folder. Add this Custom Symbols folder to the Project Properties Schematic Library hierarchy. Move it to the top of the list. (see attached image) Copy one of the symbols from one of the built-in library folders into the Custom Symbols folder. Do not change the filename. Modify this symbol and save the file. Now, when you click to insert this symbol from the active menu, you will get the altered version from the Custom Symbols folder, because it is at the top of the library list. Be advised that if the original version of this symbol had been inserted into this drawing previously, the AutoCAD portion of AutoCAD Electrical will default to it instead. Use the Update Block utility to force the software to update the existing symbols to use the altered version from the Custom Symbols folder.
The E-stop symbol is located in the Pushbuttons category of the menu. (see attached image) If you want to add more contacts to the E-stop, click on 2nd+ NO or 2nd+ NC. These commands add additionaol contacts to an existing symbol.,
