Change family name

In the help file it states to change a family name for retag
(LIM instead of LS) you can edit or create the file WD_FAM.Dat
Where does this file need to be located?
anywhere in the support path?

Also does this apply to the parametric PLC symbols?
I would like to tag the PLC modules IM for input module and OM for output modules.
I don't see a Fam attribute in the PLC modules.

Thanks

Joe

[Nate response: yes, can be anywhere
in AcadE or AutoCAD support path. Search order is this:

symbols?

[Nate response: yes, but it applied
to all modules, both in's and out's. So, let's say you want to quickly change
the behavior of AcadE so that it tags all PLC I/O modules with an "IO" prefix
instead of the default "PLC" prefix. Add this line to your wd_fam.dat text file
(create the file if it doesn't exist):   PLC,IO ]

face=Arial size=2>

I would like to tag the PLC modules  IM for input module and OM
for output modules.

[Nate response: If you want to map "IM" to the "PLC"
prefix if the module happens to be an input module and "OM" if an output module,
then the wd_fam.dat file is not going to help you. You can map every "PLC"
prefix to "IM" or to "OM" but there is no provision for this mapping file to
differentiate between types of "PLC" modules.

What you're going to have to do is edit the ace_plc.mdb
support file and change a setting for each module in the database. You'll
change it from "PLC" to either "IM" or "OM". You can do this through the
"PLC Database File Editor" tool (or use your own copy of Microsoft Access...
which might be faster since you can do a find/replace). If you use the PLC
Database File Editor tool, select an input or output module and display its
record data. In the "Attribute Tag" section, scroll over to the entry
marked "TAG". Note that the value for this attribute is "PLC%N". If this is an
input module, change it to IM%N. If output, change it to OM%N. Save and exit.
Test. It should work. You should see the generated tag look like "IMxxx" or
"OMxxx" where "xxx" is the next available sequence number or the module's
insertion point line reference value.]

I don't see a Fam attribute in the PLC
modules.

Thanks

I was trying to use the WD_Fam.dat to retag the Parametric PLC symbols, but can seem to make this happen. I would like to retag the PLC tag to a IEC equivalent tag name. All the other symbols convert on a retag but not the Parametric symbols. Can this be done?

I use the parametric plc's, is there a reason when using the WD_fam.dat file to change the PLC's tag from PLC to another character doesn't work. All the other components seem to convert. Is it because the attribute name is "tag" and all the other symbols are "tag1". The file is placed in the same directory as the .wdp file.

The PLC tagging is driven by the PLC database itself. You have to change
the tag format for each PLC type using the PLC Database File Editor. If you
must deviate from PLC to something like the letter A (i.e. IEC) then you
must change it in the PLC database. I know it seems like a lot to do, but
just change the ones you use most. See attached screenshot. The PLC%N
would tag a PLC as PLC301 if it is inserted on rung 301. For IEC tagging
you may wish to change the format to A%N. If you are using IEC sheet and
zone tagging the module might be tagged as -24A3 if it is on sheet 24 under
zone 3. The leading dash is an IEC thing.

It appears that you have to delete the symbol and re insert the symbol before the new settings take effect. Else if you just do a retag, the PLC tag remains as a PLC even though you changed the tag to A%N in the database. You are correct we are looking for a way to convert the tag names from a JIC to IEC project, but ran into a road block with the parametric PLC's.
