Catalog Record Table

To cure my own curiosity, I have a couple of questions.

Why is there a limitation on how many characters (60 for the description and less for others) you can put in the Catalog record table?

Do you guy's plan on expanding them at all?

Thanks

I believe you can manually widen most of these fields, if you'd like. If you
have a copy of Access, open the file (make backup copy first!) and give it a
try. I think that it will work.

No I can't get it to have any more characters than 60 for the description. I don't know maybe I missed something.

Maybe you could give it a try for me.

Did you open the default_cat.mdb file with a copy of Microsoft access? If
so,
1) Select a table (ex: the "PB" table)
2) Select "Design" (probably the 2nd toolbar icon in the table selection
subdialog)
3) You'll get a table listing the field names in the table. Highlight a
field and check the "Field Size" value in the bottom part of the subdialog.
Change from 60 to whatever you're thinking that you need.
4) Exit
5) Test

If you don't have Access, let me know what fields in what tables you want to
be wider. I'll send you a test mdb.

Nate.

Okay It does work but, I do not normally edit my parts descriptions in the access file. I edit my components in the table I have attached.

In that table, I still have a 60 character limit. I do not have that limit in the access database.

is there a way where I can change that also?

Thanks

Okay, you are correct. The Catalog Lookup --> Edit Record's dialog has an
internal max limit on this edit box set at 60 characters even though you may
have gone into your Access database table and manually widened that field. I
don't see a work-around at this point other than manual editing in the mdb
file itself. Sorry. I'll add this one to our user interface issues list.

Nate.

Could you also put in your user interface issues, that if you do need 255 characters for your description, maybe you could have an option for "wrap around text" so the fields are not so long.

To me it seems like a person would use the description for the bill of material information and the other fields like "Type", "Coil? and "Contacts" would be best used to help in the search for certain properties.

Basically, What I'm trying to do is make the best use of space for my bill of materials. Less real estate. Like for contacts, when it say's 1 N.O. Contact, I do not want it to have it's own Line. I would include that with my description. Then when I run my Schematic/Panel Reports I would change my format to just use the description and not Pull the info from the contacts.

Thanks,
