Alternative Plc Display method

Heres one for you Nate
i ve seen quite a bit on the traditional method of showing a PLC i.e. layout an input card across a page and show connections to it

but there is an alternative method which people use its split about 50/50 with my clients and that's to show a schematic function with all relative input channels output channels on a single page

the plc card is split into a parent and child symbols

with the parent being a PLC card overview and the child's being single inputs and outputs

so you can have say a VSD on a page showing the outputs and inputs related to the VSD on the page

has anybody had a go at doing this method and how painful was this

see example from alternative electrical design package

Right, there's no reason why you cannot do it this way... an overall PLC
parent symbol and then sprinkle single-point child PLC IO symbols throughout
your drawing set, referenced back to the single parent representation. The
parent would carry the MFG/CAT attribute assignments so it would show up one
time in the BOM. You could have the parent symbol include an "XREF"
attribute so that it could show the cross-ref location listing of all of its
children.

Nate,

Your response sparked an idea. Rather than using a parent PLC symbol, use the parametric build and match the single point I/O symbols to that. This does work, but lacks the automatic xref on the parametric build. An xref attribute can be added (XREF_), but there needs to be some method to associate the xref with the I/O address.

The capability for this would be very good for those of us who show the PLC modules on separate sheets in the same sequence as the physical locations on the PLC rack. We've been using wires and S/Ds for this, which works, but is rather labor intensive. Is this doable or just a pipe dream?

See the attached drawing. Thanks.
