dwg opens in earlier version of autocad

When I open a drawing I drag it to my desk top and drop it onto the icon for the latest version of cad that I am using (2012). Sometimes I forget and double click on the drawing, when I do, it opens in an earlier version (2011).  Where can I change the setting to fix this?
