When i change a linetype in an xref file and then reload the file,  The linetype does not change in the file i am referencing the drawing in, leaving me to manually change the linetypes within the drawing.  I have never had this problem before until recently. any suggestions?

The VISRETAIN sysvar controls this. However, it also controls the xref layer's on/off & freeze/thaw properties. When set to 0, these are not remembered and the Xref controls the appearance. When set to 1 then the target drawing remembers how the Xref looked at initial insertion then keeps track of any disoplay related changes done within that drawing and ignores those in the source xref dwg.
