What is Civil 3D and Civil 3D Design?

Time for a subscription renewal and this question couldn't be clarified by
the Autodesk consultant to what the difference is.

What is "Civil 3D Design" and what is "Civil 3D"?

As a two-person engineering division in a design-build construction company,
compatibility with others is not a significant factor. We have stopped
using our Land Desktop (with Civil Design) and moved to work exclusively in
Civil 3D. We use Map for some things that don't require the capability of
C3D. Any old projects that were created in LDT are still in 2006 and we
won't use LDT 2007.

Is this an elaborate marketing scheme or just confusion in product naming
where everything you buy has "Civil 3D" in the name?

Many thanks,

It's like deja vu, all over again.

This has been discussed in great depth on this forum. There
Civil 3D Design. There are three programs available to you:

1) Civil 3D.
2) Civil 3D Land Desktop Companion - this is regular ol' Land Desktop
3) Civil 3D Civil Design Companion - this is regular ol' Civil Design.

If you've moved to Civil 3D, then you need to buy Civil 3D. That's it,
nothing else.

Anthony, are you listening??? 😉

I wouldn't call it elaborate.........it would take a couple of other words
to accurately describe what type of marketing scheme it is.

I love the product, by the way............Marketing...........well......it's
unfortunate that they make some of the decisions that they do. Their
hurting their own cause, it would seem to me.

I am listening, and as discussed before, its out of my hands. Is this
happening enough that we need a technical document to explain it better? I
thought we had put it in the FAQ, I'll have to check.

I really think so. I don't think it should be long and elaborate, just
explaining what the various options are. I've written it a few times
a week for almost a year, why don't you use my copy? 😉

I'm going to have a T-shirt made that says "How do I install Civil
Design into Civil 3D" and wear it to Manchester in October. Then I
think I'll take it off and stick it down someone's throat.... 😉

Manchester in October?

Should I be looking for some flannel underwear after Thursday's meet up?

Hmmmm.

That's a good question.

Right now, I'm going to lean toward "no, I don't think so," but we'll
have to wait and see what the complete game plan is. Unless, that is,
I'm supposed to be the one creating said game plan....

I think you're the one that not only is suppose to create the game plan but
also the one calling the plays into the quarterback.

Interestingly enough, I'm also the quarterback. And the center. And
the offensive line. And the team doctor. And the waterboy.

We'll work to get this posted as an article to the Civil Community once its
public.

For now, just add it to my bill, and we'll settle up at year's end.

I think wanting to put it into an FAQ is just more evidence of the problem.

To many watching these NGs, it is no big deal. We get it. We're geeks,
though. You're going to scare off prospective customers by the loads of BS
they have to go through trying to figure out what the product even is.

Other comments withheld........I'm not trying to pound you......I just find
this whole situation extremely questionable. It is frustrating since the
product (overall) is very good and shows so much promise for the future.
