When you sample for cross sections, the 'swath width' is the distance (left and right) from centerline that will be sampled from the specified surface. These values will determine the overall width of your sampled cross section. Using 25 left and 25 right will give you an existing cross section sample of 50'. It is better to err on being too wide than too narrow when specifying swath widths to make sure you have adequate sampling for tie in of cut fill slopes. I suspect you are using Land Desktop and not Civil 3D, which is a separate software package and the focus of this specific forum. You way want to post future questions to the Land Desktop forum. You may also want to run through some of the tutorials included in LDT (via the Help pulldown) that will walk you through the process of cross section design.
