What is the Revision Number field in Surface Statistics for and how/when is it populated?

(No connection with Autodesk other than using the products in the real world)

IDSP Premium 2014 (mainly Civil 3D 2014 but also 3ds Max Design)

Good question because it doesnt populate when I "revise" a surface.
