    Sharing Surfaces in 2006

With the use of the new data shortcuts, can I reference a surface, and then add hide boundaries to the surface reference without adding them to the actual surface object? What we need is the ability to show an existing surface on one sheet, and then show the surface with contour lines hidden across roads or grading pads on another. If this capability does not exist, is there a way now (or in '06) that we can do this without having two different files with two different surfaces? Thanks.

You cannot do this with references, since references are locked. You
could use the project setup to checkout the surface from the project,
    then apply your boundary.

I haven't tried it, but it should work. You might lose the boundaries
when you update from the project. An interesting conundrum.

    Hi Kevin,

I've experimented using wipeouts to simply hide the contours I don't want
shown but haven't actually used it for production yet.

If anything, this is a very temporary workaround. I mean, what happens when
you want to modify the original surface in both drawings? If you update the
modified surface back to your project, both copies will have the new
boundaries. I think what would be needed here is a "child" object.
Surface1 + boundaries = Surface2. I think this could be quite useful if we
could have one "master" surface, and then several children which are just
variations of the surface. A good example would be a large subdivision done
in phases. We might have several thousand acres of topo, but only need a
fraction of it for phase 1, and subsequent phases may have boundaries that
    overlap phase 1.

I think the project mechanism is a major weak point in the product right
now. There are TWO separate data sharing mechanisms, and neither one is
complete or ideal. It would have been better if they could have just added
alignments and profiles to the original project mechanism and skipped
shortcuts all together. They take WAY too long to validate whenever you
open any drawing in a project, and they don't really offer anything that
wasn't already available. In addition, dragging multiple copies of existing
ground surfaces around is going to kill our data drive, but that is a
    problem with either mechanism.
