Profile Grades in Plan

Found this on the Civil 3D reminders blog http://blog.civil3dreminders.com/2012/08/profile-grades-in-plan.html but I can't get the first method to show the grade (not tried the second method yet)

Any advice??

The first method only shows the profile geometry points, the second method is for the grades.
