If you do a REGEN, does the layer become visable? If so, check your REGENAUTO setting, it may be turned off.

There is a setting for layers that are off to either not display, or lock and fade. Is it doing the lock and fade for you?

If the components of the object are on different layers turning off the insert layer would not turn off the component layer.
Example:
default layer for point insert = V-node
marker style layer = c-topo-spot
label style layer = V-node-text
turn "off" v-node and the point and label style remain. freeze v-node they all go.
Think of c3d ojects as nested blocks made of components on thier own layers and it has a singular insert point
