I did a blog post on this very topic early in my blogging career: http://civil3dplus.wordpress.com/2010/02/11/those-pesky-contour-label-lines/
And it doesn't look like anyone else has mentioned it, but AVOID using layer DEFPOINTS for ANYTHING.
You can now specify any layer as being non-plotting, so there's no reason to put things on DEFPOINTS. Putting things on other layers helps others know what you meant, and is far more useful than simply putting things on a generic layer called DEFPOINTS. Not to mention, DEFPOINTS is intended to be used internally by AutoCad, and you can end up with "AUDIT$BADLAYER" things when running Audit on drawings if you stick things on Defpoints.
Best rule-of-thumb is to NEVER use DEFPOINTS. I know this is contrary to what some old-timers used to do, but it's a "best practice" these days.
And don't use layer 0 either, for the same reason. Plus turning off or freezing layer 0 can have, how shall I say this, some odd results.
