It IS a public Beta. The problem is that AutoCAD is not! If they gave it
away to everyone, everyone would have AutoCAD 2004 for a limited time, so
they came up with an easy way for them to be sure that the only people that
have it are existing customers. And, it offers another argument in favor of
subscription.

Civil 3D makes it very simple to do simple things. The problem is that
right now it can only do simple things. This will change, though...

Yeah but Dave, this is coooollll. And yes it will be complicated. I see the
problem being much the same as now. Engineers think it is below them to
create drawings, and drafters don't have the patience to learn what all the
dialog boxes are about. So there will be the segment in the middle getting
the most use out of it. But trust me on this one: It is neat. It is really
something that 2 yr engineers LOVE. What seems to be finally going away is
the old DCA way of drafting things. You could do cross sections and
profiles, but they only came in one flavor. It seems with all the toggles
you are going to be able to bend things to your own standards more. And
AUTOMATIC EVERYTHING.
I don't see how it could be public beta, then everyone gets to use it for
free. This is more like a hobby copy. If you lik messing around with it,
and you want to get a head start on the future, well there you go.

but to someone who has R3 in order to get C3D I would be forced to upgrade to 2004
which is not a worthwhile upgrade from a civil perspective. So in order to get C3D you have to pay.
C3D is not free in that respect.

If its really beta then why don't they just bundle it with a demo version of LDD? They got demo versions of Autocad,
right?

It is not free. You paid for it with your subscription. If it were free

We just upgraded a bunch of seats and I just upgraded to LDD R3 instead of 2004
I also skipped subscription. Skipping releases was not the big deal that I had thought.
Autodesk wanted to make deals at the end of the quarter so I got great prices, so thus
making a subscription a bad investment.
