Edit preview in 2013, can it be disabled?

I am not sure what the correct term is for this, but I am talking about clicking on an object, opening the properties box and running my curser down the list of layers to choose the one I want, and meanwhile as the curser moves across the layer names, the object in the window is switching colours and linetypes to preview what it would look like for each layer.

I get migraines from flickering things and I REALLY could do without this unecessary and stomach churning preview.  I can't find an obvious setting in the options dialogue box. Is there a way to disable it?

    Thanks

The System variable PROPERTYPREVIEW controls this.

    Command: PROPERTYPREVIEW
Enter new value for PROPERTYPREVIEW <OFF>: off
