    DTM Build methods

    Hi,

If you use Civil 3D to build a DTM from contours only (scanned hand drawings
from the early 1900s, no DTM was ever contemplated),
does it have any krigging type tools to help interpret the shape of the data
inside peak and hollow contours and re-entrant contours. Or are the tools
the same as in ALD - a face flipping type process ?

Hi Laurie - Surface smoothing using the Kriging method (or Natural Neighbor
Interpolation) is available as a surface edit, but I'm not sure if that's
what your looking for. Do you need the program to add a high/low point at
the tops of hills, bottom of holes in the surface (when creating surface
    from plines)?

    Cheers

    Hi Dave,

I've managed to do some testing now in Civil 3D and found that the software
does not create surface interpretations in the circumstances I described.
I've attached 4 screen grabs of the experiment which I think illustrate the
situation. The white line shown in the view with the contours is a hand
drawn polyline at a non integer value. The other starting polylines I drew
probably don't show in the screen grabs.

I guess I'm not surprised that this is the case. It would take some
seriously complex decision making to extrapolate levels into the area on the
    right.
