Autodesk, in their infinite wisdom, is getting rid of the newsgroups and
moving them to a web based forum only.

They only seem to fix things that get a lot of complaints. So maybe filing every single problem with Autodesk support will be better - we might get more of the problems fixed, instead of needing to work around them year after year and release after release.

    Sinc,

I think you have a very valid point, but I also think that some problems are solved via the reseller or implementation teams and so those issues never make it to the discussion boards.

At a previous employer we had problems with not being able to check drawings in to the vault. I personally thought the issue was possibly a switching or latency issue with our network (that's probably not the best description). A situation caused by the way our network was set up vs the way vault was intended to be set up. We escalated the issue up the ladder and had an Autodesk developer log in and look at our setup. I personally wasn't available during that session (can't guaranty I would have been helpful). The tweeks that were made temprorarily solved our issues, but the problems eventually came back. I switched jobs since that occured and know that they now are moving everything to data shortcuts as the issue was never fully resolved.

The point I'm trying to make is that during that time, I scoured the web and discussion groups for similar issues as to what we were running into and never found any significant conversation or data to help us resolve our problems. I have experience with implementing massive site installations of Oracle and know that a lot of the time issues are resolved on one off basis or sometimes during testing, only to pop up randomly weeks or months after implementation and no one, other than the initial team who resolved it, ever knew it was an issue to begin with.

Which means more programmers and engineers to fix the problems and who
    pays for that????

    Not Autodesk.

Yes, no more using Outlook or Thunderbird to read the newsgroups.
Autodesk is forcing everyone to use the web based system.

I think what will be most disappointing is if, after the upgrade, we still have basically the same pathetically slow software.

Sometimes it works OK, and is only three or four times slower than most other forums. But other times, it's terrible. This morning is a great example. I click on a thread, and it takes several minutes to load. So I've been clicking on a thread, then switching to another browser tab and reading three or four threads in another forum, then switch back to this tab to read the thread that FINALLY loaded.

Some days it's even worse, and these forums are completely inaccessible for hours. I see an awful lot of "WebSeal" error pages.
