Civil 3d and 7970m GPU problems

    Hello,

I have started trying out Civil 3d 2012.
When in 3d mode and rendering there is a lot of lag and my file has started to crash often.

It is a relatively small job with about 400 drawing objects and 4 surfaces.

My computer is a Metabox laptop p150em.

    Specs:

i7 2.4 Ghz with intel 4000HD on chip

    16gb ram

    7970m GPU

    256 Gb smamsung 830 SSD

Here is the 3D performance log:

    Version: 19.0.1.00

Chip set         : HD Graphics 4000
    Memory           : 1766 MB
    Driver           : 8.17.0010.1119

Your machine contains a 3D Device that is not certified.

As more graphics cards and 3D display drivers are tested, they are added to a list on the Autodesk website.

You can check for updates and download the latest certification list at any time. Run the 3DCONFIG command and click the Check for Updates button.

    Current application driver:    acaddm10.hdi

    Current Effect Status:
    ----------------------
Enhanced 3D Performance:   Available and on
    Smooth display:            Available and off
Gooch shader:              Available and using hardware
    Per-pixel lighting:        Available and on
    Full-shadow display:       Available and on
    Texture compression:       Available and off
Advanced material effects: Available and on

Available application drivers and effect support:
    -------------------------------------------------
    Software driver
    Effect support:

      Enhanced 3D Performance:   Not applicable
      Smooth display:            Not applicable
      Gooch shader:              Software emulation only
      Per-pixel lighting:        Not applicable
      Full-shadow display:       Not applicable
      Texture compression:       Not applicable
      Advanced material effects: Not applicable

    Autodesk driver:  Not Certified
    Effect support:

      Enhanced 3D Performance:   Available
      Smooth display:            Available
      Gooch shader:              Available

As you can see its running off on chip graphics and not dedicated card.

Ive tryed fiddling wth drivers to force it to use 7970m by disabling HD drivers but it still cant find 7970m, I assume this is because 7970m uses enduro and is normally off unless it senses 3d work. I have set CAD as a high performance program in catalyst also.

I have also updated drivers but that causes more issues.

Is there any way to force Autocad to pick it up?

Also it appears that tune is dated awhile ago, is there a way to get it to re-run?

    Thanks very much

I would try to force running Autocad without enabled HW acceleration:

    1. edit the properties of the Civil icon on the desktop (or wherever you have it)
    2. add /nohardware at the end of the running string

In other words, you should have something like this:
    "C:\Program Files\AutoCAD\acad.exe" /nohardware

Thanks tryed that, seems to run maybe a little quicker then the HD4000 with hardware excel turned off.

Its still sluggish though, would really love to get my 7970m cranking.

    Thanks again
