Utilities to show on Profile and Cross sections

One thing painfully obviously missing from Civil is the ability to represent a utility (water line, electrical duct, overhead electric lines, etc.) with a 3dpolyline or feature line!! This, to us, is a major deal.
Ideally, we'd like to draw a 3d poly or feature line in the plan/survey drawing and declare that a utility. This should then show up appropriately in the profile and cross section views.
I certainly do not like the work around of using sewer lines to represent utilities. Particularly overhead electric lines or waterlines that follow the grading of the surface.
If anyone has any other workarounds or if the sewer line can be made to work well (without a manhole at every vertex) then please let me know.

Lyle,

In 2010 the ability to project a featureline(or other objects) into a profile or cross section view. This sounds like it might address what you asking for below.
