use xref surface for more than displaying?

Can I somehow xref a surface into a drawing and use it to create profiles, sections, gradings etc?

Not with an XREF (although you can add Civil labels to an xref); you will need to use data shortcuts to use surfaces in the way you describe.

Refer to help/youtube for detailed instructions http://docs.autodesk.com/CIV3D/2013/ENU/index.html?url=filesCUG/GUID-A9F4AA32-F531-4257-ABF8-A2F8FCE...

If you DRef the surface in and apply a hidden style you can still use the xref contours for display/plotting and create the profiles/sections/vol's/etc you need.
