surface data reference

Anyone know what a surface data reference is? THe surface isn't data shortcutted and when I click to edit it opens in another dwg. Thanks.2-8-2013 9-02-37 AM.jpg

It sounds like a shortcut to me. Either created though standard means or linked through Vault.
